Name of inhabitants: SAVESI

Patron Saint: San Giovanni Battista

THE ORIGINS

It is believed that Sava was founded at the end of the XIV century even if a messapic origin is presumed (IV-III century B.C.). Throughout the ages, after being part of the Principality of Taranto, Sava went through several feudatories among whom the Jesuits. Full municipality liberty was recognized only in 1810.

Sava is mainly a rural country town that boasts a strong wine growing and producing tradition due to its most prestigious vine the "PRIMITIVO".

Once in Sava it is interesting to see: The Baronial Palace dated 1500, placed in the town center and current town hall, was entirely built in local tuff.

The Matrix Church, built at the begging of 1600 and dedicated to St. John the Baptist (Patron Saint of Sava) is characterized by a church tower that ends with a spire in baroque style.

It is also extremely interesting to visit the Sanctuary of the most Holy Virgin Mary of Pasano built in 1700, the Church of St. Francis (constructed in 1800) and the Greeks Limitone (a dry stone construction of the VII-VIII century placed in Cemarda quarter).
